Syllabus
At Expressway The Driving School all the Instructors teach people to drive following a proven training syllabus, the syllabus is broken down into six stages. These stages are covered at different speeds of learning due to the fact that some people come to us already partly trained and others are complete beginners. Whatever stage you are at when you begin to learn how to drive with us your instructor will be able to pick up at your level and adapt his/her teaching to suit your standard.
Stage One
The Complete Beginner
- Introductions - check driver's licence and eyesight.
- Main controls - operation and function.
- Precautions - entering vehicle and starting up.
- Moving off and stopping.
- Steering.
- Changing gears.
- Use of mirrors before signals, slowing down or stopping, before changing any course of direction.
- Introduce DSA Theory Books, DVD's, CD Roms.
Stage Two
Basic Driving Manoeuvres in Light Traffic
- Revision and practice of previous training.
- Auxiliary controls.
- Moving off and stopping - uphill and downhill gradients.
- More detailed use of the gears.
- Progressive use of the accelerator and brakes.
- General introduction to MSM/PSL.
- Normal driving positioning for right and left hand bends.
- Safe positions for normal stops.
- Explain traffic signs and road markings make up.
Stage Three
Developing Manoeuvrability, Junction and Light Traffic Driving
- Revision and practice of previous training.
- Reversing - ability to drive backwards straight, in a curve and following a kerb.
- Turn in the road to develop manoeuvrability.
- Reverse parallel parking and bay parking to the right and to the left.
- Junctions - vehicle control to make effective observations.
- Junctions - control of speed at corners and junctions, including progressive.
- Footbrake and accelerator.
- Junctions - use of MSM PSL.
- Adequate clearance to parked cars and other obstructions.
- One-way streets.
Stage Four
Developing Driving in Driving Test Traffic Conditions
- Revision and practice of previous training.
- Daily maintenance checks.
- Reverse to driving test standards.
- Turn in the road to driving test standards.
- Reverse parallel park and bay park to driving test standards.
- Developing finesse and smoothness in gear changing. Use of gears as necessary.
- Develop control on uphill and downhill junctions.
- Develop observations at obscured T-junctions and crossroads, entering onto busy major roads.
- Cross the path of other vehicles safely at busy right turn junctions.
- Develop knowledge and confidence at traffic light systems, box junctions, zebra and pelican crossings, school and railway crossings.
Stage Five
As Wide as Possible Range of Road & Traffic Conditions
- Emergency stop to driving test standard.
- Mini roundabouts.
- Roundabouts.
- Where necessary quick progressive driving with safety.
- Observations and forward planning. (Awareness and anticipation).
- Rural country roads.
- City centre traffic conditions.
- Overtaking moving vehicles.
- Fast dual carriageways.
Stage Six
Driving Test Preparation
- Mock driving test and revision as required.
- The Driving Standards Agency Test explained including pupil/examiner attitude, examiners presentation and system of assessing.
- Practice and fault correction on driving test routes.
- Driving Standards Agency Driving Test.
- Motorway lessons offered. (Not compulsory)
- Pass Plus course offered. (Not compulsory)
